first, a little heat, and a glove with some grip
because on top, is a dab of glue
ok, replacement on. neat
mm, hefty
ok, taped up the leather, so this is a “before” pic
some very deep pitting, note the one under the 5
this is after 180 grit
then 400
then cleaned out 11 years of human hand shmoo surprise, the numbers/letter were always red
i think with this trial run thats all I’ll do, leave it brushed at 400 grit With the better condition one I’ll go full polish this one still has some pits (under the 5 etc)
and nothing I can do about missing leather, but I did clean and treat the leather

Congratulations, glad it worked.
Nice job refinishing it too. Even if I threw up in my mouth a little at the description and stunning difference removal of “ hand schmoo surprise” made.

indeed. the car is in great condition, but clearly never been actually detailed. there is hard to see at first hand goo on nearly all the frequently used controls. just a light layer of filth in al the nooks and crannies
whenever it stops snowing, I’ll be doing the sort of detailing that involves q-tips and sever dedication

Quite an improvement, though!

I have that scale, though I can’t say I’ve every weighed my knob. The refinished metal looks surprisingly good.

Well done!
As for the leather, I’d start looking for leather pieces
at crafts stores to replace the trim piece on the knob. It looks like it’s glued in place, so
you could easily undo the stitching and work it off with a knife, then use it as a template for the replacement
.

not a bad idea. considering this knob is now a spare, I can experiment with some other fabric options. and having the leather off I could sand all the way to the edge easier

Thinking of knobs whilst polishing a different knob

How did it get pitted that bad to begin with? I can’t imagine what previous owner(s) did to it.

Maybe you could use a paracord wrap as an alternative to new leather. I think it’d be easier to fit, but maybe a bit harder to clean...

a solid question. others have specula ted that a large ring, like a class ring, on the right hand. but its odd, its like weathering, more than just deep scratches.
